PRAWN farmers and trawlers have welcomed a federal government ban on imported frozen prawns, following a devastating disease outbreak which crippled local production last month.The crustacean-killing white spot disease was confirmed at five Alberton prawn farms and in the Logan River, in an Australian first, last December.Though the source of the outbreak has not yet been determined, Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce today declared he would bar the importation of frozen, imported prawns indefinitely.Locals farmers have long canvassed for the move, and some believe an earlier ban could have prevented the recent epidemic.
